New Delhi (September 30): The National Union of Journalists (India) condemned in strongest words the killing of freelance journalist Ajay Vidrohi in Sitamarhi, Bihar, and also the reported attack by Narain Sai supporters at Amar Ujala office in Agra on September 29. NUJ(I) president Mr Ras Bihari said the killing of Ajya Vidrohi and also the attack on ‘Amar Ujala’ office in Agra underline the immediate need of enacting a Journalist Protection Act so that the mediapersons can work in a free atmosphere. He demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and also compensation to the family of Ajay Vidrohi.

NUJ(I) Secretary General Ratan Dixit said that the various state units of the NUJ(I) also condemned the killing of the journalist and NUJ(Bihar) unit organised statewide protests demanding high level inquiry.

According to reports, Ajay Vidrohi, a freelance journalist, was shot died by two unidentified by criminals on the evening of September 29. The killing is a major setback to the team of Election Commission which is trying to conduct election without violence. The incident took place in high security Ward Number 8 of Sitamarhi where local MLA Sunil Kumar Pintu also lives. Ajay Vidrohi had dispute with his neighbour for some time. When he came out of the Police Station after filing a complaint against the neighbour, some people shot him. The passerby informed his family members. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Police are investigating the attack. According to Police, Ajay Vidrohi was 55 years old and had worked in many newspapers. The local people and journalists assembled at the residence of MLA Sunil Pintu and requested him to press upon thorough investigation into the incident.
