Media industry is passing through a major crisis. Since the time of demonetisation hundreds of journalists lost their jobs. Very recently more than 300 non-journalists employees of PTI have been retrenched in one day&
39;s notice by the management. All of them were covered by Wage Board. Although as yet journalists employees have not been touched, yet no body can give any guarantee that the axe will not fall on them also in future.

On the other hand attacks on journalists are increasing day by day. In the recent times journalists were killed brutally in some states including Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Incidents of beating and harassing the journalists by the police and local mafia have become a frequent phenomenon. Particularly journalists working in remote places in the districts are their easy target. Despite strong demands for a long time by various journalists organisations, particularly by NUJ(I), to put in place legal framework to provide safety and security for the journalists, the administration is not paying any heed to them. The Central Government is silent about promulgation of the Journalists Protection Act.

With this backdrop the situation is becoming grave rapidly. Under the circumstances the responsibilities of the Trade Unions of media persons have increased enormously. But unfortunately there are some groups with vested interests among the journalists who are trying to create division in the unity of journalists fraternity with a view to weakening the struggle.

But NUJ(I) is dedicated to fight for the cause of journalists which it is doing since its inception more than 46 years back.

NUJ(I) is committed to carry on the its duties and responsibilities towards the journalists despite obstructions from some vested interested quarters.

But to perform this the first and foremost thing is to keep the unity in tact among the members of out organisation. If we remain united NUJ(I) will be able to withstand all sorts of obstacles that may come in its way by the rivals.

That is why I call for unity of journalists members in our organisation and my appeal is not to be misled by any kind of provocation from any quarter.

I have strong belief that a united NUJ(I) SHALL OVERCOME AND BE SUCCESSFUL IN ACHIEVING ITS GOAL.
