Press Release

West Bengal Governor assures NUJ (I) press freedom, protection of scribes

New Delhi, June 06: West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has assured the National Union of Journalists (India) (NUJ-I) to ensure press freedom in the state and protect all journalists against coercive and arbitrary actions.

Replying to a petition by the NUJ-(I) to him with regard to trampling down of press freedom by Mamata Banarjee Govt.  Mr Dhankhar has said "I will do all to ensure freedom and independence of the Press". The National Union of Journalists (India) has expressed serious concern about the way the press is being pressurised in West Bengal .The sudden exit of Anirban Chottopadhyaya Editor, the Anandbazar Patrika after being summoned and questioned by West Bengal Police has created  a big question mark regarding the state of the media in Bengal.

NUJ(I) President Ras Bihari in a recent tweet had sought the intervention of the West Bengal Governor for the greater interest of journalists. Earlier the Governor in his tweet had sharply reacted that" Press freedom is nonnegotiable. It is the spine of Democracy and guaranteed by the Constitution". Governor has mentioned that the President of the National Union of Journalists has drawn his attention to the recent limitations and pressures on the media and which needs urgent focus.

Ras Bihari, NUJ(I) President has extended his hearty thanks to the honourable Governor for the quick and positive response.
